In this piece titled “A Modern Day Renaissance”, I’m drawing inspiration from my background in Art History and capturing the world around me through a contemporary lens. Much like Vermeer’s “Milk Maid” we see a simple, passing moment in time solidified in oil yet each detail alluding to the daily life of the artist. The female figure is in my art studio smoking a vape, a symbol of my generation (Gen Z) and posing for a picture, one you would only see on social media. Her pose and the fleeting smoke coming from her mouth point to the spontaneity and quickness of tthe moment. The paints in the background and the laptop suggest a higher pursuit of education in the arts. On the wall we see some of my work, paintings and fashion. The work is very feminine by nature and contrasting a historically male dominated field where women were not allowed to pursue mentorship in the arts, also solidifying the piece on the timeline of modernity.
